Taking on a chess Grandmaster

A chess gandmaster Keti Grant was welcomed to the Islands last week when she took on 23 aspiring chess players in a simultaneous game at the An Lanntair Arts Centrein Stornoway.

Keti was the 1985 World Junior Girls Champion was pitted against competitors which included pupils from the Nicolson Institute. Also a young man from Inverness, Andrew Newton, who played a fine game which was the last to finish.

Two competitors beat the Grandmaster - Alasdair Macleod (Lews Castle) and Poy Yi Law (Nicolson Institute).

The simul would not have been possible without the sponsorship of Robert Doig, Optician, Stornoway and James Lennie, ‘Goldcraft’, Stornoway.

The venue, An Lanntair, was provided by the Director, Roddy Murray. Books and magazine prizes were supplied by Quality Chess, Glasgow, Chess Scotland and Chess and

Bridge London. The event was enjoyed by all and it is hoped to arrange something similar in the near future.
