It is undeniable that Garry Kasparov is one of the best chess players in the history of the game. In the following chess video excerpt, Grandmaster James Plaskett analyzes a classic Kasparov victory with the black pieces in the King's Indian Defense. Kasparov's opponent in this game is the legendary Alexey Shirov, an extremely dangerous attacking player who is renown for his incredible tactical sense and imagination. It is also one of the most heavily analyzed openings in today's game and continues to enjoy incredible popularity at all levels (elite players such as Anand, Caruana, Kamsky, Nakamura, etc.. continue to play the Ruy Lopez). The c3 Sicilian - Crushing Black's Sidelines
Posted on May 31,2013 By William in Strategy & Game Review, Chess Openings, All Articles w/ Videos. The c3 Sicilian is itself a sideline against the Sicilian Defense, but that doesn't mean that black has to follow the main lines either! After 1. e4 c5 2. c3 there is ample room to maneuver for black as he maintains a variety of different moves at his disposal. The main lines of the c3 Sicilian after 1. e4 c5 2. c3 are 2. ..e6, d5, d6, and g6 - but what should you do if black deviates from these principal continuations? In the following chess vid[...]

The Sniper! How to Beat the Maroczy Bind
Posted on May 29,2013 By William in Strategy & Game Review, Chess Openings, All Articles w/ Videos. The Sniper! is an exceptionally versatile opening choice for black, however the Maroczy Bind can give you trouble if you aren't familiar with effective plans to break down white's space advantage. The Maroczy Bind is a very direct system for white, playing to maintain a big center and permanently prevent black from achieving thematic breaks involving ..d5 and ..b5 thrusts. In the following chess video excerpt from the extensive 4-Volume chess DVD[...]

PRESS RELEASE

14th ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships off to a flying start

The beautiful city of Chiangmai is playing host to 400 children and their families for the 14th ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships, and the first rounds of the Rapid tournament are under way. Friday promises to be "organised chaos" as we switch from Rapid to Blitz, while the main tournament begins on Saturday, sponsored by drinks company ThaiBev.

Similar to the Olympiads, it is possible to be awarded CM, FM and IM titles without the usual requirements of norms and ratings, so the tournament has attracted some of the best young players in the region - particularly from Vietnam, whose players have turned the Imperial Mae Ping's convention hall into a sea of red. Junior players have come from as far afield as India, Hong Kong and Mongolia, as well as the Southeast Asian nations.

"The best thing about this tournament is the response of the children," said Tournament Director Panupand Vijjuprabha. "We have amazed them with our Thai style welcome at the airport, luxurious hotel surroundings, traditional dance show at the Opening Ceremony and a spacious playing hall, and their excited happy faces are the reward."

FIDE General Secretary, Ignatius Leong, lending a hand in the organisation, is back at the board in the Senior tournament.

Results of each round are posted to Chess-Results.com

Bruzon and Iturrizaga qualify to World Cup in Costa Rica Zonal

Two of the strongest Latin-american players obtained their entries to the upcoming World Cup in Tromso at the Torneo Zonal 2.3 played in San Jose, Costa Rica on 1st – 7th June. Lázaro Bruzón and Eduardo Iturrizaga got this privilege after finishing with 7.5/9 points.

The unlucky third place went for Cuban GM Yunieski Quesada, who arrived from a great performance at the Elite Group of the Capablanca Memorial in Havana. His two direct rivals have more experience on international competitions, and this factor might have been key in the final results.

Both Bruzón and Iturrizaga came from failing to qualify at the Americas Continental played in Bolivia, where none of them managed to arrive among the five first places that guaranteed a spot at the mentioned World Cup.

The event was played with a rather unbalanced line-up. It would have been a great surprise if either of the other eleven players would have overtaken the three favorites. The difference in Elo rating was simply too big. Thus, it is worth mentioning the performance of Costa Rican IM Leonardo Valdes, who finished fourth with 5.5 points.

Final Standings:

Nepomniachtchi leads World Rapid Championship by 2 pts heading into the final day

2nd day review: Yan Nepomnyaschiy is two points ahead of the nearest rivals at the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships.

The second day of the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk was marked with the confident play of Yan Nepomnyaschiy. The Russian Grandmaster scored 4.5 points during 5 games of the second day, the same result he made during first five rounds. Therefore he is on top of the current standings. Nepomnyaschiy has 9 out of 10 before the last day of rapid chess. The closest competitors - Ildar Khayrullin (Russia) and Ivan Cheparinov (Bulgaria) - are two points behind and share the second place.

Jan Nepomnyaschiy started the second day by defending his compatriot Alexei Dreev. He continued his victorious March with outplaying Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan), Boris Grachev (Russia) and Le Quang Liem (Vietnam). He just lost half a point in a game against Dmitry Andreikin.

The famous Russian commentator GM Sergey Shipov said the following on the successful start of Russian player:

"Yan is lucky at the tournament to have three positive factors combined luckily for him, - Shipov thinks. He is in a great shape himself. And plus, his main competitors don't show their best performance, due to different reasons. Grischuk is keeping secrets in his openings. Ponomariov is not in the best health shape. Dreev is not so young anymore to cope with tough tournament. I was expecting more from Andreikin, but maybe he doesn't force the preparations, for he has more important tournament ahead - Tal Memorial.

Yan found the right balance between light and deep game. This is very important in rapid chess, where you don’t have a possibility to sink into the depth of the game. He plays very quickly and thinks deeply only in critical moments.

In recent years Nepomnyaschiy was not so successful, but he worked hard and sooner or later the result has to come. In my opinion, he has a great chance to win two golden medals but let's see what will happen.

Standings after 10 rounds: 1.Yan Nepomnyaschiy - 9 points, 2-3. Ildar Khairullin, Ivan Cheparinov - 7, 4-9. Alexey Dreev (Russia), Vladimir Akopian (Armenia), Vladimir Potkin (Russia), Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan), Alexander Grischuk (Russia), Sergei Movsesian (Armenia)

The final five rounds of the World Rapid Chess Championship will be held on Saturday, June 8 at 3 p.m. local time.

Teenage cricket lover out of the game after breaking ankle - playing CHESS
12:00pm Friday 7th June 2013 in News

By Anna Roberts
Teenage cricket lover Doug Porter broke his ankle – playing chess.

The 17-year-old, from Ditchling, was on holiday in Wales when he picked up the freak injury.

BHASVIC student Doug has been unable to play cricket since being hurt when a game of chess got heated.

He explained: “I was on holiday and I was playing chess against my brother. I went to rugby tackle him and I lost.”

His teammates at Ditchling Cricket Club joked the accident showed how dangerous other pastimes could be.

A spokesman for the club said: “We have a proud record of looking after the health and safety of the younger players but as a precautionary measure the 1976 copy of snakes and ladders has been removed from the conservatory area.

“Further sanctions introduced in the wake of this injury include the creation of a safe area by the cricket nets where members can play paper, scissor, stone without hurting themselves.”

How to Beat the Caro-Kann by IM Andrew Martin
Posted on June 07,2013 By OnlineChessLessons.NET Contributor in Strategy & Game Review, Chess Openings, All Articles w/ Videos, Beginner's Corner. The Caro-Kann Defense is one of the most solid chess openings black can play against 1. e4. The Caro-Kann was made popular on a large scale by the efforts of former World Chess Champion José Raúl Capablanca in the earlier parts of the 20th century. The Caro-Kann became associated with Capablanca's incredibly solid style as the former champion would use it to draw with black, seemingly at will. But don't be fooled - as not only is the Caro-Kann an[...]

Kasparov has fled Russia?

$

By KIRIT RADIA
MOSCOW June 6, 2013

Russian chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov has fled his country because he says he fears political persecution if he stays.

"I kept traveling back and forth until late February, where it became clear that I might be part of this ongoing investigation of the activities of the political protesters," Kasparov told a press conference at the United Nations in Geneva on Monday, where he was receiving an award.

"Right now I have serious doubts that if I return to Moscow I may be able to travel back. So for the time being I refrain from returning to Russia," he said.

Kasparov's departures is just the latest in a string of prominent Russian who have left the country because they fear prosecution. In a statement posted later on his website, Kasparov insisted he had not emigrated permanently from Russia.

"Russia is and will always be my country," he wrote, adding that he would continue his democracy advocacy from abroad.

Kasparov was ranked the number one chess player in the world for a record 20 years, but retired from professional chess in 2005. In recent years Kasparov, who famously defeated IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer in a series of chess matches in 1996, had become a strident opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin's government. He co-founded a pro-democracy party and has been a prominent speaker at anti-Putin rallies that have been held over the past year and a half.
