Chess among ten most popular sports in Russia

Russian Internet giant “Yandex” has presented a list of ten most popular sports in Russia. The list was composed after examining queries in the Yandex search engine.

The two most popular sports are football (5-10 million queries per month, depending on season) and hockey (6-8 million per month).

The other sports in the top ten list are motosports, basketball, biathlon, boxing, volleyball, athletics, tennis and chess (with expected 2-3 million per month).

Interest in various sports depends on the regions. South of Russia is more interested in football, while Chelyabinsk Oblast and Urals prefer hockey.

Belgorod Oblast follows volleyball, thanks to the successes of the local team.

Relative to the total numbers, chess is most popular in Pskov Oblast, Republic of Kalmykia and Altai Republic.

Udmurt Republic is home to biathlon and bowling fans.

Why is Magnus Carlsen not playing in the FIDE World Cup?

Algorithms, a wonderful chess documentary, highly recommended

Hello Susan,

Following our successful Kickstarter campaign, I thought I would update you on ALGORITHMS, our documentary about blind chess players in India.

The response so far has been fantastic. Really, we have been blown away by how well the audience has taken to the film at film festivals around the world. This culminated in Algorithms winning the Audience Award at the RAI International Festival of Ethnographic Films which was held in Edinburgh last month!

http://raifilmfest.org.uk/film/festival/2013/festival/film-prizes

Whether it be in Edinburgh or at the World Premiere in the International Film Festival of India in Goa, or at the International Premiere at Sydney Film Festival, every post-screening Q&A, has been really great with engaged discussions about the issues raised in the film. Most viewers feel they have seen a world they never knew existed and are amazed at the characters in the film. The three youths, Darpan, Sai Krishna and Anant Nayak, and their mentor, Charudatta Jadhav, have emerged as real heroes!

Here are some reviews of ALGORITHMS that have come out.

Ian McDonald’s “Algorithms”: An Exemplary Documentary – Dear Cinema

http://dearcinema.com/news/ian-mcdonalds-algorithms-an-exemplary-documentary/3816

And here are a couple of responses to the film by eminent filmmakers that we received following the screenings in Goa and Edinburgh respectively.

"I loved this film. It is all that a documentary should be. Unobtrusive and compassionate without being sentimental, sympathetic without being condescending".

Shyam Benegal, Filmmaker from India.

"Algorithms is a splendid film that succeeds in the very difficult task of following a number of characters over several years in diverse locations. In tracking the fortunes of young blind chess players in India, it shows a deep respect for the individuals involved, the game of chess itself, and above all for the audience, never succumbing to the temptation to oversimplify or sensationalize its subject."

Prof David MacDougall, Filmmaker and Anthropologist from Australia.

And Algorithms was featured on the FIDE website. FIDE have been very supportive of the film as you will see here:

http://www.fide.com/component/content/article/1-fide-news/7190-algorithms.html.

Going forward, we are now looking forward to more screenings in different parts of the world. Geetha and I are getting ready to go to South Africa where Algorithms is screening in competition at the Durban International Film Festival in South Africa (on July 24 & 26).

http://www.durbanfilmfest.co.za/2013/documentary-films/algorithms

Algorithms has also been selected for the competition section of the International Ethnographic Film Festival in Belgrade in October, as also in competition at the prestigious Jean Rouch International Film festival in Paris in November. http://comitedufilmethnographique.com/

We are still waiting for a screening to be confirmed in the USA! We will keep you posted!

Thanks so much for all your support. Its really appreciated. I hope we can continue to rely on your support in letting as many people as possible know about the film, and about the incredibly talented young blind chess players of India..

Best wishes

Ian

Raining gold in Iran at the Asian Youth Championships

Source: http://www.sportstaronnet.com

It rained medals for India at the recently-concluded Asian youth chess championship in Sari, Iran. The Indians pocketed as many as 49 medals including 20 gold in all three segments — standard, rapid and blitz — in the girls’ and Open categories. The overwhelming show by the youngsters is encouraging news as the players lived up to the expectations.

“Good results are coming from the age-groups for quite sometime. Several top GMs like Pendyala Harikrishna, Koneru Humpy and Dronavalli Harika made their mark in age-group tournaments during their formative years. Chess has become the favourite game for the middle class and modern-day parents strongly believe that the game enhances the intelligence quotient in children,” said veteran Grandmaster and seven-time national champion Pravin Mahadeo Thipsay from Pune. He felt that many parents preferred chess to other popular games like cricket, hockey, football, tennis and badminton. “The mushrooming of academies in the country is also a reason for the surge witnessed by the game”.

Koneru Ashok, a Dronacharya and World No. 2 women player Humpy’s father, said the patronage (to chess) offered was not on merit but on personal basis. “These children will face the reality when they grow up as sponsorship will become a major issue to participate in the rated tournaments aboard to enhance their ratings”.

He said many talented players gave up chess after achieving good rating due to lack of financial support. “When it comes to employment, only oil companies are offering jobs presently. The corporate and the government sector should come forward and offer jobs to talented players thus giving them a sense of security,” Ashok added.

Even more prizes added for the SPF Girls' Invitational

$

Last night, I made the announcement that I will personally sponsor an additional $5,000 cash prizes for the top 3 finishers of the 10th annual Susan Polgar Foundation Girls' Invitational. You can read what I wrote below.

Today, one of the sponsors / partners of the Susan Polgar Foundation just donated another special prize for the winner, valued at approximately $2,400! The official announcement will be made at the Opening Ceremony.

This means that the winner can potentially win the following:

- Full tuition and fees scholarship to Webster University (approximately $100,000)
- Cash scholarship ($3,000)
- iPad mini (approximately $340)
- Another special prize (approximately $2,400)

- Champion's trophy

Here is what I wrote yesterday:

Around 12-13 years ago, the Executive Director of the United States Chess Federation (USCF) visited me at my Chess Center in Queens, NY, to ask me to help the federation in various important areas. Two of the things I was asked to help were:

- To create a serious US Women's Olympiad chess program as no women's team from the US has ever won any medal before that.

- To help boost girls' chess popularity in the US as they were being ignored at that time.

I said yes and immediately began to work to improve a number of different aspects. The first official business was to create the Susan Polgar Foundation (SPF).

Then, the Women's Olympiad training program was created in late 2002 / early 2003. The program included IM Irina Krush, IM Anna Zatonskih (at that time was a WGM), IM Rusa Goletiani (at that time was a WGM), and WGM Jennifer Shahade (at that time was a WIM). I even came out of retirement after nearly 9 years of hiatus to participate and lead this team.

In 2004, the US Women's team captured 4 medals (2 gold and 2 silver) at the Calvia Chess Olympiad. Since 2003, every single US Women's Champion has come from this Women's Olympiad training program which I created.

Also in 2003, I created the Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls (it is now called the SPF Girls' Invitational), the most prestigious all-girls national championship in the US. This was the first all-girls national championship created in the United States and it was unanimously approved by the Executive Director and the USCF Executive Board.

A few months later, I persuaded the USCF to approve the All-Girls National Championship (sponsored by KCF). I also created two additional events: the Susan Polgar National Open for Girls and the Susan Polgar World Open for Girls (both sponsored by the SPF).

Since then, nearly $2 million in scholarships (through SPF and our partners) have been awarded to girls in events which my foundation organized and sponsored. This is the 10th year of the SPF Girls' Invitational, and it will be the largest one ever, with 58 young ladies qualified. To celebrate the tremendous success of this event, I decided to expand it by inviting some additional young female players from North, Central, and South America.

The total budget / prizes / scholarships for this championship is almost $250,000! It is unprecedented for girls' chess anywhere. All state representatives and qualifiers will receive free rooms and meals for the entire duration of the event, plus many extra goodies. Over the years, thousands of girls have competed all across the United States to earn spots in the invitationals.

I am very proud to lead the charge to get more girls involved in chess, and to revolutionize girls' chess in America. To celebrate the special 1oth anniversary, I have just decided to personally sponsor $5,000 cash scholarship to the top 3 finishers ($3,000 to 1st, $1,500 to 2nd, and $500 to 3rd).

This is a surprise as it was not announced before. The winners can use the cash prizes toward school / tournament expenses, or additional coaching, however they wish. I also hope to attract additional sponsors next year to make this event even better.

After the completion of the 7th round of Ikaros International Chess Tournament 2013, upsets and surprises keep coming up, with FM Stathes Gazis (seeded No. 5) of S.M.S. Elefsinas keeping the lead having an absolute (7/7) score, and the 19 years old Dimitris Kanellos of S.O.Pagratiou (seeded No. 22) tying for the 2nd place.

Standings after the 7th round has as follows: 1) Gasis (FM, Greece, 2263) 7 p. in 7 games, 2-3) Velicka (GM, Czech Republic, 2433), Kanellos (Greece, 1986) 6 p., 4-9) Kiselev (Russia, 2210), Rigopoulos-Tsigos (Greece, 2085), Nester (IM, Ukraine, 2307), Malikentzos (FM, Greece, 2347), Kondou (WIM, Greece, 2182), Frendzas (IM, Greece 2363) 5,5 p.

Eva Kondou (of S.O.Santorinis) seems to have secured the title of female Aegean Champion while the title of the Aegean Champion will be contested among Frendzas (S.O.Santorinis, 5,5 p.) and Poundzas, Heropoulos and Lazaridis (S.O.Ikarias, 5 p.).

Dances, Sightseeing and Exhibitions

After the very dense schedule of the first days of the tournament, the participants at last had plenty of free time on the afternoon of the 17th of July, the day of the celebrations for the liberation of Ikaria from Ottoman occupation and had a very good time at the local “panigiri” (festivities).

On the previous day some members of the local cultural club “Ioannis Melas” had taught the chess players the local dances and especially the widely famous “Ikariotikos” (the traditional dance of Ikaria). Members of “Ioannis Melas” also offered to the chessplayers a guided tour at the Cultural Museum of Aghios Kirykos.

On top of these activities, the organizes of “Ikaros 2013” with the help of the local cultural clubs staged at the playing venue an exhibition of photos and documents that aims to introduce the tournament participants to Ikaria, its beauties, history, culture and its unique traits.

The same material has been presented before during the Exhibitions of the Greek Popular Culture in 2008, 2009 and 2010 at the stand of the Ikarian Culture Clubs of Athens and were twice awarded with distinctions. The text accompanying this material was written by Marina Moula while the photos belong to Christos Malahias.

More events!

The last round of the 36th International Chess Tournament “Ikaros” 2013 – Aegean Open Championship will take place on Saturday morning.

The closing ceremony and the prize giving as well as the honorary awards to the past and present mayors of Aghios Kirykos and Ikaria will take place at 7.p.m.

After the closing ceremony the 4th Mediterranean Rapid Team Tournament will take place.

On Sunday and Monday there will be friendly matches between the teams of Ikaria and Samos as well as some events in the memory of the first Ikarian candidate master Manolis Stavrinadis.

All chess events of “Ikaros” 2013 are organized by the Municipality of Aghios Kirykos and Ikaria Chess Club at the Sports Center of Aghios Kirykos.

This year the promotion of the tournament has surpassed all previous records, with TV and radio spots on nationwide stations, articles in major newspapers (double-page article in the Friday, July 19, issue of the “Ethnos”), and extensive references at Ikarian and chess websites in Greece and worldwide!

The Janisch Gambit is one of the most aggressive systems that black can play against the Ruy Lopez, closely resembling a reverse Vienna Gambit or King's Gambit as black offers a very early pawn sacrifice with 1. e4 e5 2. GM Damian LemosToday we’re going to review a game from the 10th round of the 2013 Tata Steel Chess Tournament, played between GMs Ivan Sokolov and Peter Leko. This game is an excellent example of the Nimzo-Indian Defense with the main line 4. e3, demonstrating a very aggressive plan for the white pieces by GM Sokolov who rapidly sought to expose the defects in Leko’s solid defensive set-up.

By Frank 'Boy' Pestaño and Frank 'Boy' Pestaño

Thursday, July 18, 2013

ACCORDING to Wikipedia, securing a perfect score (100 percent) in a world-class tournament is very rare. These were achieved mostly by world champions.

Those who did it are Gustav Neumann at Berlin in 1865 (34/34); Henry Atkins in Amsterdam 1899 (15/15); Emanuel Lasker in New York in 1893 (13/13); José Raúl Capablanca in New York in 1913 (13/13); Alexander Beliavsky in Alicante in 1978 (13/13); Alexander Alekhine in Moscow in 1919–20 (11/11) and Bobby Fischer in the US Championship of 1963/64 (11/11).

Vera Menchik won four consecutive Women’s World Chess Championship tournaments with perfect scores, a total of 45 games (8-0 in Prague 1931, 14-0 in Folkestone 1933, 9-0 in Warsaw 1935, and 14-0 in Stockholm 1937) . She was a British-Czech chess player who gained renown as the world’s first women’s chess champion. She also competed in Open chess tournaments, defeating many of men’s players, including future World Champion Max Euwe.

Another woman, Valentina Gunina won the Women’s section of the 2010 Moscow Blitz tournament with a 17/17 score.

Carlos Juarez has won the national championship of Guatemala 24 times, an all- time record in National championships. He was here in Cebu in 1992 at the invitation of Cepca to play a simul tournament together with Jaime Sunye-Neto of Brazil , Walter Arencibia of Cuba and Eugene Torre.

The Philippines’ pride Wesley So scored 9/9 in the 2011 Inter-Provincial Chess Team Championship, He won the gold medal in men’s blitz in the 2011 SEA Games 2011 in Indonesia with a score of 9/9 and a rating performance of 3183,and also won the 2013 Calgary International Blitz Championship with a score of 9/9.

Incidentally last July 15 Wesley , a student at the Webster University in Saint Louis, captured the gold medal at the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan after tie-breaks.

After nine rounds of play in the men’s section, nine players shared the first place with 6.5 points each.

Wesley So won the gold medal, Zaven Andriasian from Armenia took the silver, while the previous winner Li Chao from China, got with bronze.

The tournament director required Wesley to play an Armageddon game with Andriasan, although according to Susan Polgat, it was not necessary and a breach in the rules.

Wesley still won despite playing with the black pieces.

Bobby Fischer had a string of 19 consecutive wins against some of the very best players in the world. He won his last six games n the 1970 Palma de Mallorca Interzonal . In the quarterfinals of the Candidates Matches leading to the world championship, he blanked Mark Taimanov 6-0. In the semifinals, Fischer clobbered Bent Larsen by the same score. Original letter http://www.sah-zveza.si/news/1307/Dajmo%20Vesna.pdf. You can use http://translate.google.com to translate the letter. She needs help from the chess community.

The father of the WIM sent a letter asking for help:

Dear Sir,

I turn to you with a request for a donation for the cancer treatment of my 26-year-old daughter Vesna Rožič. Vesna is a final year student of the Faculty of Medicine and a permanent member of the Slovenian chess team. In May this year she became seriously ill. The doctors diagnosed metastatic peritoneal carcinoma. Since Vesna fighter by nature, she has decided that we shall all work together to combat the cancer.

Vesna’s treatment was initiated in Slovenia, where she has already received two cycles of systemic chemotherapy. This is not enough to cure the disease. We contacted the Medias Klinikum GmbH, Burghausen, Germany, where Vesna will receive further treatment. Doctors estimate that it will require at least three cycles of local chemotherapy. Each cycle costs between 15,000 and 20,000 Euros. These treatment costs are very high. We are able to pay for the first cycle of local chemotherapy in Germany, but turn to you and ask you to help us collect donations to pay the remaining costs of Vesna’s treatment.

Maybe I did not say everything I wanted at the moment, but my distress and the hardship in our family is so great that I cannot do any better.

Yours sincerely,
Adrijan Rožič

Donations should be addressed to the Regional Association of the Red Cross Maribor, IBAN: SI56 0451 5000 0397 432, Ref: 50751, purpose: Vesna Rožic (Bank details: Nova Kreditna Banka Maribor, Vita Kraigherja 4, 2505 Maribor, BIC/Swift code: KBMASI2XXXX). All funds received will be reserved exclusively for the payment of expenses for Vesna’s treatment in Germany. In the event that more funds than necessary will be raised the remaining money will be allocated to the development of young chess players and chess activities of the Slovenia Chess Federation. – Primoz Kokalj, Secretary of the Slovenian Chess Federation.
