Newbury Park chess prodigy unveils giant set in central London
Lizzie Dearden, Reporter

11:23 AM

A young chess prodigy from Newbury Park has been playing his biggest game yet with a giant outdoor chess set in central London.

Devdoot Barman, of Brook Road, is the current junior champion of both the Ilford Chess Club and the Wanstead Chess Club and had numerous titles under his belt before he even hit his teens.

As a member of the Pimlico Chess Club, the 14-year-old was invited to unveil the first of Westminster City Council’s new outdoor chess sets in Soho on Thursday.

He was joined by Samir Samadov, 11, who represented England in the European Schools Chess Championships in June, and Cllr Frixos Tombolis.

Cllr Tombolis, member for transport and environment, said chess will be a “focus for people to come together, enjoy the fresh air and exercise their minds as well as their bodies”.

Spectacular performance by Mickey Adams

The 2013 edition of the Sparkassen Chess Meeting saw the comeback of a great player, England’s number one Michael Adams. He obtained clear first place thanks to a 7/9 score with a rating performance of 2925. The live ratings already have the Englishman in the twelfth position with 2761 points. This was Adam’s greatest tournament performance ever.

Second place went to ten times winner of this event Vladimir Kramnik. The Russian could have taken first place with a win over his direct rival in the last round. It is worth noting that these two players faced each other in the last rounds of both the 2012 London Chess Classic and the 2013 Alekhine Memorial. Kramnik, who needed to win, used the Sicilian but had to settle for a draw in no more than 14 moves, given the variation chosen by Adams, which forced the draw or left him with a superior position.

Kramnik’s performance was not bad at all, however. He obtained a 2866 rating performance and recovered the third position in the world ranking. Six out of his nine games finished decisively and his defeat against Adreikin was the key factor for him not taking his eleventh title.

Adams – Kramnik

Peter Leko and Arkadij Naiditsch shared third place with an even score. This fact shows that the two first positioned players clearly dominated the tournament. Leko actually lost four rating points with his performance, while Naiditsch kept his 2710 rating.

Fabiano Caruana and Wang Hao had a rather disappointing tournament, where they lost some rating points due to losses against the nominally weaker German players.

The first edition was also won by Solodvnichenko, who was able to celebrate again after the tiebreaks calculation put him in first place over two other players that arrived at the same 6.5/9 score.

Axel Rombaldoni and Peter Prohaszka arrived to the last round as leaders with 6 points each. The Italian drew his game against Vladimir Burmakin and finished second on tiebreaks, while the Hungarian lost against Ivan Ivanisevic, who incidentally was third on tiebreaks.

The tournament was organized by the Fano Chess Club 1988 and Dario Pedini. The club celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2013.

The Grand Prix Attack Bb5 System with GM Perelshteyn
Posted on August 05,2013 By William in Strategy & Game Review, Chess Openings, All Articles w/ Videos. The Grand Prix Attack is one of the most popular sidelines for white against the Sicilian Defense, sidestepping the main lines in favor of a more narrowly targeted battle in the opening. The Grand Prix Attack Bb5 systems are highly regarded by many leading Grandmasters as the positional ideas behind his early bishop maneuver are fundamentally very solid - white plays to exchange his light-squared bishop early in the game, and then strives to plac[...]

Carlsen vs Nakamura - Insane Tactics in the Queen's Gambit
Posted on July 31,2013 By William in Strategy & Game Review, Chess Openings, All Articles w/ Videos. Carlsen opens with 1. d4 and Nakamura responds with the Slav Defense. Carlsen plays an early exchange on d5 and play steers towards the Charousek Variation of the Queen's Gambit. I was not extremely impressed with Nakamura's choice of opening with black as Carlsen was able to gain an extremely rapid lead in development followed by a very solid position and finally mobile pawns in the center. Carlsen skillfully exploited a superior position by emb[...]

Stonewall Defense with GM Perelshteyn
Posted on July 29,2013 By William in Strategy & Game Review, Chess Openings, All Articles w/ Videos. The Stonewall Defense is an exceptionally solid choice for black against 1. d4, based on strong positional ideas that are very tough to crack! The Stonewall Defense involves placing your pawns on the light squares (..d5, e6, and f5) - granting black an iron grip on the center and making it extremely difficult for white to achieve thematic breaks involving an e4 push. While black does have problems with developing his light-squared bishop on c8, i[...]

The Accelerated Dragon with GM Perelshteyn
Posted on July 22,2013 By William in Strategy & Game Review, Chess Openings, All Articles w/ Videos. The Accelerated Dragon is one of the most aggressive chess opening systems that black can employ against the King Pawn set-ups. The Accelerated Dragon is an exceptionally versatile weapon for the black player as it can be easily transposed to from a variety of Sicilian Defense variations. The follow chess video is an excerpt from the 2.5+ hour chess DVD ¨Destroy White with the Accelerated Dragon¨ by renown Grandmaster Eugene Perelshteyn, who intr[...]

Adly was denied permission to travel to World Cup

$

One of the few African representatives – and one of the strongest – Egyptian GM Ahmed Adly will not take part in the upcoming event to be held in Tromso, informed Daaim Shabazz.

Adly was prevented from traveling due to an obligatory service to the Egyptian Army.

There was apparently no way to delay the filing of military application for service. Adly told The Chess Drum that he had exhausted all efforts including the submission of an official letter from the Ministry of Sports. After trying various channels, today’s deadline to receive a concession for travel has passed.

The other Egyptian players (GM Bassem Amin, GM Essam El-Gindy and IM Samy Shoker) were not affected.

Adly graduated from Arab Academy for Science and Technology and Maritime in February and is required to submit papers to report for military service on next Sunday. The service would be one year if selected.

We will be expecting more news regarding the possible replacement of GM Adly.

Chess star leaves for Norway tourney
Posted August 7, 2013 by mitia in Sports
By MOSES CHIMFWEMBE -

FIDE Master (FM) Gillian Bwalya is this evening scheduled to leave for Norway ahead of the World Chess Championship slated for August 10 to September 5 in Tromso.

Bwalya, the International Master (IM) who qualified to the World Championship after emerging victorious at the Zone 4.3 championship in Botswana in May this year, would be among 128 players who would be competing for the $120,000 (about K660,000) first prize, with a total prize fund of $1.6 million (about K8.8 million).

The lucrative Chess World Cup 2013, is a 128-player single-elimination tournament which would see the first-round losers pocket $6,000 (K33,000).

Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ) deputy secretary Richard Mwansa said in an interview yesterday that Zambia’s sole representative at the games would be accompanied by tournament coordinator, Aaron Banda.

He said Bwalya had prepared adequately for the tournament and that he was ready to produce positive results for Zambia.

“I can confirm that all is set for Gillian’s trip to Norway for the Chess World Cup and he is leaving tomorrow (today) in the evening. As a federation we are confident that our representative would put up a good performance and reach greater heights,” he said.

And Bwalya who was bubbling with confidence said though he expected stiff competition, he was determined to stun his opponents.

Bwalya said in an interview that he was aiming for a top flight finish and refused to be cowed by big names at the tournament.

“I am prepared to face my opponents at the World Cup, and my target is to achieve something positive for the country,” he said.

Bwalya kicks off the championship a clash against former world champion Grand Master (GM) Vladimir Kramnik of Russia who is ranked third in the world.

The Swedish embassy in June sponsored Bwalya with $3000 (about K16,500) to enable him attend the 2013 World Chess Cup.

David Howell retains lead
Malcolm Pein reports on the 100th British Chess Championships

David Howell was held to a draw by Mark Hebden but still retained a half-point lead after the seventh round of the 100th British Championships was over. Howell has 6/7 with Hebden, GM Simon Williams, GM Keith Arkell and IM Ameet Ghasi on 5.5.

The players seemed invigorated by Sunday’s rest day and a large proportion of the games were won by Black. Arkell won quickly against Peter Wells and Ghasi played a nice combination to defeat Jonathan Hawkins, but this was the game of the day:
