Chess cool for thinking kids
James Greenland
Last updated 13:00 09/08/2013

Chess. It's a thinking person's game, and you need only your brain to play, boasts grand master-in-the-making Roderick Morrison.

Nayland College hosted an interschool regional chess tournament yesterday, with a bumper turnout of 164 keen young competitors suggesting that the traditional board game might be making a comeback, among even the coolest kids.

Friends Fabian Strauch, 11, and Roderick Morrison, 12, both learned to play chess under the tutelage of their fathers, and both honestly admit they have never beaten them - yet.

Roderick, of Nelson College Preparatory School, said he had played chess "since he could lift a piece". He liked the strategic board game because it "doesn't run on batteries", and you "don't need wi-fi" to play, like many computer games require these days.

Fabian said, frankly, "it's just a really good board game".

Nayland maths teacher Andrea Adair was charged with keeping the peace in the frantic chess hall, which hosted 539 individual matches between competitors from primary, intermediate, and secondary schools from across Nelson and Tasman.

Adair also organised a sausage sizzle fundraiser, with proceeds appropriately going towards the purchase of a giant chess set for the college.

"It feels like this is the revival of chess," she said.

"There are more than double the number of competitors as last year. It just shows that young people are not just about video games. Some kids do still want that mental challenge."

She said chess, a game of logic and strategy traditionally popular among males, was clearly also appealing to girls, who made up at least half of the competition.

Adair said all players were fair and put fun ahead of serious competition.

"It's great the academic kids have an opportunity to compete, and not at sports.

"It's not all about sports, and these kids really embrace it."

The tournament was brought to Nelson by Auckland company Chess Power, and was arbitrated by Bruce Pollard, who said Nelson's regional tournament was by far the most well-attended in the country.

"Nelson are over-achievers at chess," he said.

He said the top 20 players from each region would be invited to compete at the national championships in Auckland next month.

Ten-year-old Rosie Brazendale, of Motupipi Primary School in Takaka, said she was having heaps of fun, and it had been worth waking up at 6am to drive to Nelson.

Hira School's Chi Kavanagh, 10, went out of his way to thank the people who had organised the chess tournament, the first he'd ever taken part in."[Chess] helps your brain think," he said.

The Grand Prix Attack Bb5 System with GM Perelshteyn

Carlsen vs Vallejo - Closed Sicilian Domination
Posted on August 08,2013 By William in Strategy & Game Review, Chess Openings, All Articles w/ Videos. Carlsen opens with 1. e4 and Vallejo-Pons responds with the Sicilian Defense with 1. ..c5, however from there the opening takes a strange twist in move order and ends up with a Closed Sicilian by Carlsen. It seemed that black got the worst of the opening because he essentially wasted an important tempo with an early ..a6 and also white managed to achieve an annoying way of stopping black from castling early in the game. Carlsen achieved a sizable[...]

The Grand Prix Attack Bb5 System with GM Perelshteyn
Posted on August 05,2013 By William in Strategy & Game Review, Chess Openings, All Articles w/ Videos. The Grand Prix Attack is one of the most popular sidelines for white against the Sicilian Defense, sidestepping the main lines in favor of a more narrowly targeted battle in the opening. The Grand Prix Attack Bb5 systems are highly regarded by many leading Grandmasters as the positional ideas behind his early bishop maneuver are fundamentally very solid - white plays to exchange his light-squared bishop early in the game, and then strives to plac[...]

Carlsen vs Nakamura - Insane Tactics in the Queen's Gambit
Posted on July 31,2013 By William in Strategy & Game Review, Chess Openings, All Articles w/ Videos. Carlsen opens with 1. d4 and Nakamura responds with the Slav Defense. Carlsen plays an early exchange on d5 and play steers towards the Charousek Variation of the Queen's Gambit. I was not extremely impressed with Nakamura's choice of opening with black as Carlsen was able to gain an extremely rapid lead in development followed by a very solid position and finally mobile pawns in the center. Carlsen skillfully exploited a superior position by emb[...]

Stonewall Defense with GM Perelshteyn
Posted on July 29,2013 By William in Strategy & Game Review, Chess Openings, All Articles w/ Videos. The Stonewall Defense is an exceptionally solid choice for black against 1. d4, based on strong positional ideas that are very tough to crack! The Stonewall Defense involves placing your pawns on the light squares (..d5, e6, and f5) - granting black an iron grip on the center and making it extremely difficult for white to achieve thematic breaks involving an e4 push. While black does have problems with developing his light-squared bishop on c8, i[...]

Fischer’s chess precocity

$
0

Chess

By Shelby Lyman

In retrospect, Bobby Fischer’s chess precocity was mind-boggling.

In 1958 at 15 he was the world’s youngest grandmaster.

If we look at his early recorded games we encounter evidence of a remarkably mature approach to playing chess.

How did this self-taught Brooklyn boy become so good so fast? In particular, whence the early maturity of style?

The clue may be found in his unusual beginnings. Chessboards have two sides to accommodate two players. But Bobby’s early experiences were solitary.

When his sister Joan defaulted as an opponent, later explaining that “we Fischers do not like to lose,” the younger brother - abandoned to his own resources - had to do it alone.

He would first make a move from one side of the board, then from the other.

We can imagine Bobby Fischer with the black pieces playing Bobby Fischer with the white pieces. Both of his avatars, Bobby One and Bobby Two, of course, unwilling to give an inch or cede a single square. As much as each passionately wanted to win, each hated even more to lose.

Willy-nilly, the games would have mimicked the wariness of modern grandmaster play.

Did this kind of play boost his early maturity.

Is this fanciful reconstruction realistic? There is no way to know.

But we do know that he had an enormous capacity to do it alone. Perhaps an interval of solitaire chess, Fischer-style, did play a role in his early development?

Gillian says not afraid of Grand Master Kramnik
By Prudence Phiri
Fri 09 Aug. 2013, 14:00 CAT

GILLIAN Bwalya say he will not be intimidated by his first round opponent Grand Master Vladimir Kramnik's record in the Chess World Cup Championship.

Kramnik is a former world champion and was the Classical World Chess champion from 2000 to 2006 before he won the World Chess champion from 2006 to 2007.

The Russian has also won three gold medals and three individual medals at the chess olympiads.

In an interview, Bwalya who was scheduled to leave for Norway last night ahead of Chess World Cup games, said he would ride on the underdog tag to go past the first round.

"I know he will underrate me and I will utilise that to beat him. I will not be intimidated by his record," Bwalya said.

He said he had trained hard and was ready for the challenge.

"I will not give up easily, I have worked hard for this tournament," Bwalya said.

His coach Aron Banda said Bwalya had read a lot of books written by Kramnik and was conversant with his style of play.

"We used most of the books written by him (Kramnik) and Bwalya knows how to tackle him, we know his type of play," Banda said.

Bwalya, scheduled to play his first game on Sunday, is among the 128 players participating in the tournament which has six Africans.

The other Africans are Amin Bassem, Ahmed Adly, Samy Shoker and Essam Gindy from Egypt and Ali Sebber of Morocco.

No African has ever gone passed the first round of the tournament.

Bwalya qualified to the World Championships after winning the Zone 4.3 in Botswana.

The former Truro School pupil, described his victory as the greatest tournament success of his career.
