Hamdouchi and Maisuradze are 2013 French Chess Champions

$

The 88th French Chess Championships were held from 11th to 23rd August at the Palais des sports Jean Weille in Nancy.

846 players (not counting all the players in many blitz and other activities around the official events) competed in 9 official tournaments organised by the French Chess Federation and its new president Diego Salazar.

24 professionals fought in the two “Nationaux” groups for the two official titles of 2013 French Chess Champions – 12 men in the “National” and 12 women in the “National-féminin”.

In fact, there were only 11 men because GM Marie Sebag, top French female player and number 10 in the world, chose to play with the men. She had already won the women’s championship at age 14. Amongst her male colleagues, she suffered a bit, finishing last with 3,0/11 points, but she probably learned a lot.

In the absence of the three 2700-rated stars Vachier-Lagrave, Bacrot and Fressinet, who competed in the World Cup 2013 in Tromso, the top seeded players were young Romain Edouard (2662), the ex-European champion Vladislav Tkachiev (2637) and the local boy Christian Bauer (2633).

It is a big surprise that none of them finished in top 3! Finally, two experienced Grandmasters in their forties made an impressive tournament – Hicham Hamdouchi (2613 and 41-years old) and Jean-Marc Degraeve (2563 and 42-years old) finished equal first with 7,5/11 each.

Similar story in the women’s championship with the big favourite Sophie Milliet (2401) finishing only third, and two players who made the tournament of their life – Nino Maisuradze (2288) and Mathilde Congiu (2190) finishing equal first with 8,5/11 points each.

The tie-break matches were necessary to attribute the two special “Vases de Sèvres”, offered by the French President since year 1914 (!), plus a beautiful sculpture from “Daum”, a luxury items company from Nancy (http://www.daum.fr/ ).

Hamdouchi quickly claimed the national trophy by one draw and one win in the rapid games, whereas the girls had to play some blitz after two draws in rapid. Finally Maisuradze won two games and her first French champion title.

Ruy Lopez, Chigorin Defense Gambits with GM Kritz
Posted on August 26,2013 By William in Strategy & Game Review, Chess Openings, All Articles w/ Videos. The Chigorin Variation of the Ruy Lopez is a very common line because black obtains a solid position and good space in the center. White's strategy is often similar to a coiled spring, conceding space in the center while avoiding the creation of any weaknesses in his position, and focusing on the targeted development of minor pieces. However, things can quickly change in the Chigorin Variation of the Ruy Lopez as there are multiple ways that blac[...]

Rocking the Ruy Lopez with GM Kritz
Posted on August 19,2013 By William in Strategy & Game Review, Chess Openings. The Ruy Lopez is the most popular chess opening in the history of the game. The Ruy Lopez, also known as the Spanish Game, has been played by nearly every world chess champion in the last few hundred years and continues to enjoy immense popularities at all levels in the 21st century. So just why does everybody like to play the Ruy Lopez so much? Although the Ruy Lopez has been studied very deeply and the theory is extensive, chess players are sti[...]

King's Indian Defense by GM Kritz
Posted on August 12,2013 By William in Strategy & Game Review, Chess Openings. The King's Indian Defense is the most double-edged response for black against 1. d4, by far maintaining the most decisive results of all the queen pawn opening systems. The reason for this is very simple - black immediately creates imbalances in the position by allowing white to create a large space advantage in the center (normally with pawns on c4, d4, and e4) while black calmly develops his kingside fianchetto and plans a targeted strike in th[...]

Her moves are intelligent!
Henna Rakheja, Aug 28, 2013, DHNS:
Thursday 29 August 2013
News updated at 12:30 AM IST

As a six-year old hyperactive kid, her parents had no other choice but to keep her busy in various activity classes so that she did not disturb her older siblings.

It was one of these activity classes that developed her interest in the game of chess and then there was no looking back for Tania Sachdev!

The female face of chess in India, Tania recollects how she was a menace for her siblings. “They were academically-oriented and I never let them study. So the only solution to this was to get me enrolled in activity classes. One of these was chess and the day I started playing, I got glued to the game,” says Tania, who could finally be seated in one place!

Then began the spate of chess games at her home which she won at ease. “Everyone in my house was really bad at it so I could beat them,” she says smilingly. But the journey ahead was not easy because the game hadn’t seen a female interest before. “As an eight-year old when I participated in international events it was difficult to cope but I loved to travel, which kept me motivated. My mother accompanied me and by the time I was 15, a lot of parents came upto me seeking advice for their kids who were interested in chess.”

Taking advantage of her anonymity she even defeated people in chess at coffee cafe’s. “Coffee homes in Delhi were the only places where people played chess then. They didn’t know that I was taking formal training and least expected a school girl to be so good at it. So I used to go with my friends to these places and it was a great way to earn pocket money,” she confesses.

She soon took up the game professionally but still remembers, “how hard it was to bring recognition to the game in the first 10 years. Now chess has become so big and picked up so well in Delhi which makes me very happy and excited,” says the City girl when Metrolife met her at the Delhi prelims of Red Bull’s ‘The Battle for the Queen’.

“Cricket has always overshadowed other sports,” rues Tania who feels that the game should be “made a compulsory sport in schools across the country. Chess is the most-widely played sport around the world and a compulsory subject in South India. Then why not make it compulsory elsewhere in the country too? It not only exercises the brain but also develops the analytic and calculative power of the player,” she says listing the benefits.

While most mothers wonder about the diet leading to her intelligent brain, Tania states, “I don’t eat 500 almonds and five tonnes of fish everyday! Only chocolate is my weakness. I love food and eat a lot but for an intelligent mind one needs to start playing chess when young in order to build up the focus and concentration levels.”

Yet, “There is nothing as a perfect player in any sport,” says the Arjuna Awardee who enjoys the adrenaline rush of competing. “I want to cross my present rank and be in the top 20 women world ranking in future!”
